Clinical Trial Home Nursing
We work with Sponsors, CROs, and trial sites to provide clinical trial home nursing services worldwide, ensuring clinical excellence at
every step of the journey.
Our mission is to ease the burdens placed on all study stakeholders by allowing patients to participate in clinical trials from the comfort of their own homes.
Whatever your trial type we can help:
- Conventional: Centered around physical study sites, but incorporates some elements of clinical home nursing.
- Hybrid: A model that utilizes both physical study sites and home nursing visits.
- Remote: No physical study site and fully conducted in the patient’s home.

Nursing FAQs
What clinical trial procedures can be performed by mobile research nurses at a patient’s home?
Clinical trial home nursing can support protocol-approved activities that would otherwise require patients to travel to a clinical trial site.
Depending on the study design, country requirements, and investigator oversight, mobile research nurses may perform vital signs, blood draws, ECGs, sample collection, IMP administration, treatment observation, safety assessments, ePRO support, and follow-up visits.
WEP Clinical designs each home nursing model around the protocol, patient pathway, site needs, and country-specific requirements to help deliver in-home visits safely and consistently.
How does home trial nursing help improve patient recruitment and retention?
Home trial nursing can improve recruitment and retention by reducing the burden of trial participation. For many patients, frequent site visits are difficult because of travel distance, symptoms, mobility limitations, work, family commitments, or caregiver needs.
By bringing selected trial visits into the patient’s home, Sponsors can make participation more practical and less disruptive. This can be especially valuable in hybrid trials, decentralized clinical trials, oncology, rare disease, pediatrics, and long-term follow-up studies.
Is clinical trial home nursing compliant with GCP and regulatory expectations?
Yes, clinical trial home nursing can be delivered in a GCP-compliant way when properly planned, documented, and overseen. Home visits should align with the protocol, investigator responsibilities, ethics or IRB approvals, informed consent, country-specific regulations, and Sponsor oversight requirements.
A compliant home trial nursing model includes nurse training, visit documentation, safety reporting, escalation pathways, and clear communication with the investigator site. WEP Clinical supports Sponsors by building structured, protocol-aligned home nursing solutions for hybrid and decentralized clinical trials.
How are mobile research nurses trained and overseen during a clinical trial?
Mobile research nurses should be trained on the protocol, study procedures, visit requirements, documentation expectations, safety reporting, and escalation processes before conducting home visits.
Training may also include sample handling, IMP procedures, device use, and data capture tools. Oversight is managed through clear roles and responsibilities, regular communication with the study team, and documented visit processes.
WEP Clinical helps ensure mobile nursing visits are integrated into the wider clinical trial model, supporting consistency, quality, and patient safety.
How are patient safety, adverse events and urgent issues managed during home visits?
Patient safety should be built into every clinical trial home nursing model. Mobile research nurses are trained to recognize and report adverse events, urgent clinical concerns, protocol deviations, and missed procedures according to study-specific requirements.
Clear escalation routes should define when to contact the investigator site, Sponsor, CRO, emergency services, or other designated contacts. WEP Clinical plans home visits around protocol compliance, investigator oversight, safety reporting, and patient communication to help Sponsors deliver patient-focused trials without losing operational control.
Can home trial nursing be added to an existing protocol or rescue study?
Yes, home nursing can often be added to an existing clinical trial, hybrid trial, or decentralized clinical trial model, but it should be assessed carefully. Sponsors need to review the protocol, visit schedule, countries, sites, patient population, procedures, approvals, contracts, training, logistics, and data capture requirements.
Home nursing may be useful for reducing travel burden, improving retention, supporting long-term follow-up, or reaching geographically dispersed patients. WEP Clinical can assess feasibility and build a practical home nursing model around the study’s needs.
What are the key considerations for Sponsors looking to include home nursing in their clinical trial strategy?
Home nursing is most effective when built into the study strategy from the outset, helping reduce patient and site burden without compromising safety, data quality, or investigator oversight.
Sponsors should consider disease-specific participant challenges, identify the most burdensome protocol requirements, and determine which visits and procedures can be safely delivered at home. Key considerations include country-specific regulations, site workflows, geographic coverage, nurse training, safety escalation, data capture, and sample or investigational product (IMP) logistics.
By assessing operational feasibility during study design, risks can be identified and mitigated early. WEP Clinical understands clinical trial design and can help Sponsors develop protocols that are operationally feasible for home-based delivery from the outset.
Which WEP documents require ethical and regulatory approval?
WEP operational documents, such as training materials, quality procedures, and internal processes supporting clinical trial home nursing or decentralized trial activities, do not typically require separate ethical or regulatory approval. However, the use of home nursing, mobile research nurses, or other decentralized activities should be clearly reflected in the relevant study documentation where required.
This may include the protocol, Participant Information Sheet, Informed Consent Form, visit procedures, lab or pharmacy manuals, and country-specific submissions. The Sponsor/CRO remains responsible for confirming applicable ethics and regulatory submission requirements.
How will PI oversight and supervision be insured during off site visits?
The Investigator retains oversight responsibility for delegated off-site activities through documented delegation of duties, clearly defined roles and responsibilities, established communication pathways, and timely escalation of safety or protocol-related issues.
WEP supports this process by ensuring appropriately qualified, licensed, GCP-certified, and protocol-trained research nurses perform delegated activities in accordance with the protocol, applicable procedures, and site requirements. The Delegation of Authority Log must be completed before any study-related activities are performed.
Visit documentation, source data, deviations, adverse events, and operational issues are communicated to the Investigator/site team in accordance with study-specific requirements.
Can WEP support study participants in different countries to the site?
Yes, WEP can support participants in countries different from the site location; however, this requires proactive feasibility assessment, regulatory review, and operational planning.
With sufficient advance notice, WEP can assess and coordinate international mobile research nursing support, including nurse availability, qualifications and licensure, local scope of practice, language considerations, visit procedures, equipment requirements, and logistical arrangements.
The Sponsor/CRO, in collaboration with the Investigator and site, remain responsible for confirming applicable approvals, IP requirements, data protection, informed consent language, and appropriate oversight, communication, and escalation pathways.
